(Carson City, NV) – Today, Senate Republican Leader Michael Roberson will introduce a bill that would eliminate state funding for local governments that willfully ignore federal law and operate as a sanctuary jurisdiction. Senator Roberson’s actions were prompted by Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani’s declaration that she would work to make Clark County a sanctuary county.
“Commissioner Giunchigliani has decided that she will try to enact a radical, leftwing agenda by deciding which laws she believes should and should not be enforced. This flouting of the law is irresponsible. She believes that if an illegal immigrant is arrested that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) should not be alerted. This would mean individuals arrested for DUI, domestic battery and other troubling offenses would not face deportation. She would handcuff our police force by making their job more difficult and endangering the public. This must not be allowed to happen,” said Senator Roberson.
Senator Roberson’s bill will specifically tie funding to the enforcement of 8 U.S.C. 1373 and the 287(g) program. These maintain that “a Federal, State, or local government entity or official may not prohibit, or in any way restrict, any government entity or official from sending to, or receiving from, the Immigration and Naturalization Service information regarding the citizenship or immigration status, lawful or unlawful, of any individual.”
