“Senator Ford and his caucus have become experts in backpedaling and doublespeak. In reading his statement, it’s not clear what he believes or what he thinks SB 223 bill would actually do, but, I’m happy to explain both for him. Senator Ford says, “the status quo is a decent process right now”. Yet, Senator Ford and his caucus would undermine and reverse current local law enforcement policy with SB 223. Senator Ford and his caucus do not believe local law enforcement should alert Immigration and Customs Enforcement when they have arrested a criminal alien. They also do not believe local law enforcement should be able to utilize a federal database to determine just how dangerous a criminal alien is before potentially releasing the criminal alien back onto our streets.
In fact, if Senate Democrats had their way, local law enforcement would not even be able to communicate with ICE in efforts to keep our community safe. So, they wrote an arguably unconstitutional piece of legislation that would prohibit this from happening, SB 223. That is not just my determination; it is the determination of law enforcement from all corners of our state, and it is a fact. So, let’s not mince words, Senate Democrats want to handcuff local law enforcement by telling them how to do their job. It is insulting to the great men and women in local law enforcement who put their lives on the line every day to protect us and it recklessly endangers our community.
SB 223 is a sanctuary state bill that would cost us millions of dollars and make our community much less safe. I look forward to Senator Ford scheduling this bill for a vote so we can have a robust debate and I am confident that this bill will never become law.”
